Any advice on getting a CC permit? Do I even really need one? The only time I plan to have a loaded gun with me is when I am back packing in the wilderness and don't imagine a cop going through my backpack. Never owned a gun before.

Thu, March 27, 2008 - 5:51 PMYou're right, it's very unlikely you'd get searched in the course of hiking, assuming you're not going anywhere you're not supposed to be. However, if you find yourself in a confrontation with people, and you produce said weapon, and there's police contact later, you will be called on the carpet .... even if you we're 110% in the legal for a display of force, you could easily find yourself in court and at minimum you'll lose the gun.
Also, I'm a little unclear about carrying firearms in a vehicle in CA. Last I heard, it needed to be unloaded and in the trunk, not accessible by the occupants of the vehicle. Which makes me wonder what you do if you have a pickup .... anyone know the fineprint of this?
Most states CC program involved some classroom and range time, so if you're new to handling guns, there's value to getting a CC.

Re: Sonoma County
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:23 AMdepending on where you are backpacking , this is very likely a non issue.
you can open carry legally in many parts of the forest. you should look these things up in detail onthe national forest websites and ca has many pages on the stuff as well search california gun law, it comes right up. also here's a forum

weapon locked in its own container, NOT glovebox. any other box. locked suitcase in your backseat is ok. locked inside container on motorcycle, in back or front of pickup. the main point is gun locked up by itself unloaded.
ammo must be in totally seperate (not required to be locked, but also must not be glovebox) container,
**loaded magazine = loaded weapon, magazine must not be loaded**

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 7:36 PMWouldn't carrying $10,000 plus of demo equipment on my body be enough of a reason for CCW? -
